Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages down to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
