A defence minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the potential threats associated with Chinese-made vehicles, while staff have been told to avoid talking about classified information in any cars.
Safety Advice for Defence Personnel
In a recently aired appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD officials have been told not to talk about classified information while travelling in China-made vehicles.
The minister stated that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but stressed that safety is a issue in all modern cars.
We have a fleet of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any kind of car, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to only have those confidential talks in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using every cars from China, Pollard responded: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Security Background
This announcement comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and cause chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.
This broader defence environment underscores the significance of robust protocols and caution in all areas of official activities, including vehicle usage to discussions practices.
