Our Leading Record of the Year: Rosalía's Lux Secures the Top Place.

On the surface, Lux could seem closer to an arduous academic examination than the latest popular music record from an artist who just had a previous hit featured a global K-pop icon. Divided into 4 different sections and performed in 13 languages, we have a dizzying classical-tinged opus that delves into female mystery, spiritual ascent, and corporal transformation, often through the perspective of different saintly figures. The end of a romance—a theme handled with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—soars heavenward on this record, carried by the constant presence of a full symphony orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter within a vast list of collaborators. The pure ambition by itself makes the efforts of other artists look quite laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

The fact that Lux succeeds in transcend dry academic chin-stroking is almost miraculous, and sole credit belonging to the artist. Although it's not her first album to blend the past and modern styles, its scale feel far greater on Lux, and the tightrope walk more dramatic. What truly raises her fourth album, outside of its complex tunes, dense compositions, and engrained theatricality, proves to be a core spirit of fun. Much like the legendary Björk at her peak, there is a wondrous sense to Rosalía's singing that pulls the listener up in its tornado. Even when she's breaking your heart apart, you nevertheless want to be alongside her through the journey.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

That exuberant energy shines clearly on the stunning piano-led ballad about a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy over more than four minutes. Then, all the music drops silent, to reveal we hear a spontaneous giggle followed by a comment prior to a hilariously over-the-top orchestral crescendo crashes down with cartoonish impact. The song then segues to the wild single featuring galloping strings, a powerful choir, and a cameo role from none other than Björk.

"The magic with this album lies in you rarely exactly know—or even wish to predict—where you will go to next."

Nearly every track finishes at a totally distinct point than where it began. One moment examines the fleeting trappings of celebrity over a delicate symphony only to collapsing into digital chaos. Elsewhere, a cut echoing her earlier trap-infused work starts off moody and sinister, featuring menacing beats, before sudden flamenco handclaps and an angelic chorus enter to smooth the song's jagged edges.

The Balance Between Experiment and Accessibility

Another crucial achievement of Lux involves navigating the gap of radical innovation and mainstream accessibility. This is no surprise that it has achieved the artist's first release to break into the upper reaches of major charts: its heart contains a collection of utterly undeniable hits. A song performed primarily in the English language builds around a refrain that seems to gather increasingly infectious melodies as it spirals skyward. This trick is echoed by a different expansive ballad that expands and contracts, weaving layered melodies as an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number charms with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the cultural honesty of other heartbreak songs, eviscerating an ex- partner described as an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, akin to a storybook figure concealing a knife: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux represents pop on a maximalist scale, an ambitious grasp for high Art amid of looming artificial blankness. It eschews solipsism in favor of glorious transcendence, creating an over-the-top drama that masterfully manages its own inherent excess. It is an abundant source of buried gems that takes patience to fully explore but doesn't feels like hard work. Where some big releases of the year felt like feasting on meal, this record offers a lavish feast where the characters around it, perhaps intoxicated on sacred drink, flit between conversations about ancient figures, the profound sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and common stories about useless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from pop's truly endlessly creative visionary.
